Want to know how to properly spring clean your closet? The organizational experts at Closet America can help!

Springtime has long been associated with cleaning and decluttering, so it’s the perfect time to go through your closet if you’ve been putting it off. However, we don’t just mean getting rid of the clothes you don’t need or aren’t wearing anymore. Instead, you should really put in the time and effort to find more functional, and effective ways to store your items to ensure your closet will stay organized. If you want to know how to properly spring clean, you should know how to properly organize, too.

Here are our tips for how to spring-clean closet spaces and get them more organized!

Discard Old Items

To spring clean your closet, you’ll first want to take everything out so you know what can be discarded and what you want to keep. It might be time-consuming, but it’s an essential step in how to properly spring clean your closet. Everything you want to keep will eventually go back into your closet, but it’s helpful to look at each clothing piece separately when deciding what to keep. It’s also important to see your closet completely empty so you know how much space you have to work with and so it’ll be easier to tell if you are overstuffing the space you have.

Emptying your closet also gives you the opportunity to start organizing all the clothing items you want to keep by category. Rather than tossing garments into one of two piles – discard or keep – you should make different piles for the clothes you’re keeping. Doing this will make the next step on the list much easier.

There are a variety of charities, non-profits, and other places where you can donate or recycle clothes you don’t want anymore. Check out Closet America’s guide for donating clothes.

Organize Clothes by Category

When it comes to how to properly spring clean your closet, organizing your clothing plays a big part. When organizing your keep pile, your clothing will typically fall into one of three categories – casual, dress, or athletic. This won’t work for everybody, but it’s often a great place to start for most. Some people might prefer to organize by what types of items they have, keeping all pants in one area, t-shirts in another, and so on. Others might prefer to organize their clothing by color, season, or even fabric.

In many cases, the closet space you have available and how much of a certain category of clothing you have will impact how your closet is organized. This is why it is so important to clear all your clothes out of your closet, sort them by category, and see what kind of space you have to work with.

Tips for Hanging Up Your Clothes

After you spring clean your closet and are in the process of putting everything back, you’ll want to hang up all your garments optimally. This means using different, high-quality hangers for your different clothing items.

In addition to helping you stay more organized, hanging up your clothes properly will help them last longer. When considering how to properly spring clean a closet, you probably never thought about the kinds of hangers you use – but you should. Using cheap wire or plastic hangers can stretch and crease your clothes over time, and these kinds of hangers are also harder to slide across hanging rods. We always recommend using padded, velvet, slimline, or wooden hangers.
