Closet Organization Hacks & Tips to Organizing Your Closet Space

3 minute read, by Closet America, on Jun 8, 2023

Cluttered closets can lead to a cluttered mind, making you feel stressed, anxious and overwhelmed. Knowing everything has its place will give you peace of mind, make it easy to find what you’re looking for, and potentially free up more space elsewhere. An organized closet can even prevent you from buying things you already own.

Having a clean and neatly organized closet is one of life’s simple pleasures, but everyone doesn’t have the same closet space to work with. These closet hacks and tips for organizing your closet from Closet America will help you maximize your closet space and extend the life of your garments by keeping them in better condition.

Check out our organizing closet hacks and tips below to see how you can get more out of your storage space!

  1. Keep Jeans Folded on a Shelf

The first of our closet hacks is the best way to store your jeans: one of the most versatile pieces of clothing in any closet. You can dress jeans up or down and wear them anywhere. We recommend simply folding them in quarters and stacking pairs atop each other on a shelf so they are easily accessible and visible. You can organize them by brand, cut, wash or style – whatever makes the most sense to you.

  1. Fold Sweaters & Tees to Save Drawer Space

Sweaters can lose shape if hung up, especially if made of a delicate fabric like wool, angora or cashmere. For this reason, you should carefully fold them and store them in a drawer. When stored like this, your sweaters will also be safe from moths! Shirts can also be stored in drawers, as the materials won’t wrinkle easily. To save space, fold your shirts into thirds rather than in half. Organizing closet hacks like this help you maximize your space while maintaining the quality of your garments.

  1. Hang Up Dresses & Dress Pants

No matter their shape, style or material, dresses and dress pants should never be folded and stored. Instead, hang up these garments to ensure they don’t get wrinkled or lose shape. When hanging long dresses, you can use two hangers to keep them from dragging on the floor. Simply put the top bodice part on one hanger and the lower portion through the other, then bring the two hooks together to hang. One of our closet hacks for hanging dress pants is folding them over a hanger or dedicated pants rack rather than using a pant hanger with clips attached at the waist.

  1. Hang Up Your Belts & Scarves

Our list of organizing closet hacks and tips wouldn’t be complete without mentioning a better way to store some of your accessories, like belts and scarves. Most people don’t know a good way to store these items, leading to quite a mess that can make it hard to find what you’re looking for. The best way to store belts and scarves is to hang them using a hanging rack or an extendable closet rod. Hanging them this way keeps everything in view and makes putting items back in place at the end of the day a breeze.
