Live in Spring Valley? Consider Four Luxurious Design Ideas for Your DC Closet

4 minute read, by Closet America, on Sep 6, 2016

DC’s Spring Valley neighborhood is known for elegant living. If you want your walk-in closet to match the rest of your home, consider these luxury design ideas.

If you live in the DC metropolitan area, you may have driven through the prestigious neighborhood of Spring Valley. It’s a spot known for grand homes and luxury living, with the Washington Post confirming that it’s not uncommon to see multimillion-dollar houses here.

With tree lined streets and a suburban feel (despite being inside city limits), it’s easy to understand why homes in Spring Valley are so desirable. But when you move into such a spacious house, it can be challenging to make sure that storage areas like your closet maintain that sense of luxury while still being functional. If you live in Spring Valley or are just hoping to recreate the feeling of one of the area’s homes, here’s how I’d suggest equipping your walk-in.

A Stately Center Island

If you have the space, as most Spring Valley closets do, I’d highly recommend a large center island. You can equip your island’s top drawers with velvet-lined trays for jewelry and use the lower drawers as extra storage space for sweaters or other seasonal clothing that needs to be folded.

An island countertop is prime real estate, basically the focal point of your entire closet, so I always suggest using this space to showcase your favorite necklaces and bracelets. It’s a nice touch that helps create the kind of luxurious atmosphere you might find at your favorite boutique.

Islands are also an extremely popular closet accessory and can help give your home an edge if you ever decide to put it on the market.

Hidden Laundry Storage

Truth be told, there’s nothing sexy about a laundry basket, and there’s never really a good place to put one. Even if you find the perfect nook, the basket itself tends to be an eyesore in an otherwise inviting space. To give your custom closet a glamorous edge, I’d suggest losing the freestanding basket altogether and going with a tilt-out hamper that stays hidden behind a cabinet front. I may be a little biased, but I think our hampers come about as close to sexy as it’s possible for anything laundry-related to get.

Most tilt-out hampers also come with removable liners, so it’s a little less work to cart everything to the laundry room.

A Lighting Upgrade

Lighting is often an afterthought, but it has the power to elevate your closet from something mundane to something special. I’m not necessarily talking about overhead lighting, either. I often recommend that my clients add accent lighting to their cabinets and shelving since this allows them to see clothing colors and materials better. LED lights are especially great for this. They add a softer ambiance than overhead lights and are so energy efficient that you don’t have to feel guilty about using them.

Cabinet Doors

This one might sound a little strange, but bear with me. There’s something mysterious about a closed door. It’s human nature to be curious about what’s behind it. So I’ve found that adding cabinet doors to your custom closet gives the space an immediate sense of allure. And for clothing lovers, these doors are even more alluring since there’s always the chance they’re hiding one of this season’s exclusive fashion pieces.

The great thing about custom design is that you can choose a style and finish for your cabinet doors that match your aesthetic. For instance, you can go with flat panels if you want a minimalist look or a raised design for a sense of old-world elegance. And if you want slightly less mystery, you can always add clear or frosted glass panels to your doors.

You don’t want your closet to become too visually heavy, though, so I do still recommend a nice balance of open shelving and rails mixed with closed cabinet shelving. A mix like this also tends to be the most effective use of your space.

A Custom Walk-In That Matches Your Home

Living in Spring Valley already comes with the luxury of a great neighborhood. This luxury living, though, shouldn’t stop at the door of your closet. A few careful design choices can have you well on your way toward a walk-in that you might never want to leave.
