Turning a Room into a Custom Closet Dressing Room

3 minute read, by Closet America, on Oct 27, 2022

Closet dressing rooms give you the perfect space to pick out your outfit, try on different ensembles, and get ready to go out. Perhaps you already do so in your bedroom or bathroom and are tired of clothes being left outside the closet or want a floor-length mirror and a little more privacy. A personal dressing closet for your bedroom is an absolute must-have if you consider yourself a fashionista or have a lot of clothes. But we recognize that not everyone has an expansive walk-in closet they can transform into a dressing room. If you find your closet space is lacking, consider transforming an extra room in your home into a dressing room. It’s a great idea, but it can be difficult to know where to start. When you design, ensure that the functionality is top of mind. Consider what hardware to include and the best ways to keep everything organized and prevent clutter. If you’re overwhelmed, we’ve got you covered. Check out these tips for everything you need to know – from the best lighting for dressing rooms to personalizing the space for your needs.

Closet dressing rooms can be broken down into five elements: storage, lighting, wall and floor coverings, seating, and personalization. Each is equally important to ensure you make the best use of the space and can enjoy it for years to come.

Storage

With how many different clothing items and accessories you’ll want to store, you’ll need a variety of storage options. Closet dressing rooms can include cabinets, drawers, shelves, and hanging sections to create a clean space where everything has a place. Pull-out hampers and ironing boards are also things you can consider adding to built-in storage units. If the room is big enough, consider adding a center island for even more storage space.

Lighting

Lighting is an often-overlooked aspect of what separates a good closet dressing room from a great closet dressing room. The best lighting for dressing rooms should illuminate everything clearly so there are no shadows that could distort how certain pieces of clothing or outfits look on you. In addition to being bright, lighting should also be comfortable and make the space feel inviting. If you have windows in the room you’re transforming, consider whether you feel comfortable changing with them open or whether you want to have the curtains drawn while trying on clothes. Another option is to frost the window so that you get all that wonderful natural light without any privacy concerns.

Wall & Floor Covering

In addition to being functional with plenty of storage options, closet dressing rooms should also be stylish. This is the main purpose of the wall and floor coverings you choose to include in the space. The walls and floors are the largest surface areas in your dressing room, so feel free to add some personality. Consider different wallpapers and area rugs to make a statement and add some glamor to the space.

Seating

Seating is definitely something you want to consider if you want your closet dressing room to feel like a boutique showroom. Sitting chairs and small, elegant couches are common in closet dressing rooms with room for seating, but you can also consider adding a window seat if the room you’re transforming has a large window.

Personalization

The clothing you wear reflects your personality and style, so a dressing closet for your bedroom where you keep it all should as well. One of the easiest ways to do this is by picking wall coverings in colors and patterns you like. Or you can choose wood stain or paint colors for your clothing organization unit. And finally, fill the space with your favorite art and décor. There are plenty of ways to showcase your personality and make your dressing closet one of your favorite places in the house.
