Custom Walk-In Pantry Shelving Systems

Closet America designs and installs custom walk-in pantry shelving systems for homes in the Washington, DC area and across its service markets. A walk-in pantry shelving system replaces fixed or wire shelving with a built-in configuration sized to your specific pantry dimensions, with adjustable components that accommodate how your household actually uses the space.

Each system is built at our Landover, MD facility and installed by our own team, typically in a single day.

pantry-storage

A well-configured walk-in pantry works by zoning storage around how often you reach for things. Items used daily, like spices, snacks, frequently grabbed canned goods, go on eye-level adjustable shelves at the front of the system. Bulkier items like stand mixers, large serving dishes, and bulk pantry stock go higher or deeper, where the space exists but access can be less immediate.

Slide-out baskets and pull-out racks keep smaller or irregularly shaped items visible without stacking, which is where most pantry disorganization starts. The result is a space where you can locate what you need without moving anything else to get to it.

Walk-In Pantry Shelving Features

During a free in-home consultation, a designer measures your pantry and configures a system based on what you store and how frequently you access it. Standard components available for walk-in pantry systems include:

Configuration decisions — shelf depth, zone layout, door-swing clearance — are made during the consultation based on the dimensions of your pantry and your storage mix. You can review the full range of hardware and components before your appointment.

Pantry Shelving Materials and Construction

Walk-in pantry shelving systems from Closet America use 3/4-inch shelving panels with a thermofused finish. The thermofused process bonds a resin-impregnated paper layer to the panel surface under heat and pressure, producing a scratch-resistant finish that does not require sealing or refinishing. Hardware includes metal shelf connectors and soft-close drawer hinges. Systems are floor-mounted for stability.

Every system is built to the measurements taken during the in-home consultation. There are no stock sizes to adapt around.

Warranty Coverage for Pantry Systems

All walk-in pantry shelving systems come with Closet America’s standard guarantees. Coverage details are on the transferable warranty page, and include:

  • Transferable Double Lifetime Warranty: Covers defects in labor and materials for as long as you own the property. Transfers to a new owner if the home is sold.
  • Lifetime Service Guarantee: Covers labor, workmanship, and materials for any service needed after installation, at no charge.
  • Design Quote Guarantee: The written quote issued after your consultation is honored for 12 months.

We were planning to upgrade our pantry from wire racks to something more customized and elegant. We met with a number of vendors and Closet America was the only one who was able to offer us a truly customized shelving unit that met all of our needs.

The Design and Installation Process

The full design and installation process follows four steps:

  1. Consultation: A designer visits your home, measures the pantry, and produces a 3D rendering using our design software. No purchase commitment is required.
  2. Design approval: You review the proposed layout and written quote. Changes are made until the design is right. The quote holds for 12 months.
  3. Build: Components are cut and assembled at our Landover facility to the exact specifications of your approved design.
  4. Installation: Our installation team delivers and installs the finished system, covers floors with protective tarps and runners, and cleans up before leaving. Most pantry installations are completed in a single day.

Schedule a free design consultation to get a 3D layout of your pantry and a written quote with no obligation to purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

A functional walk-in pantry requires enough floor space to enter and turn around while accessing shelves on at least two walls. A common minimum is roughly 5 feet by 5 feet, though smaller spaces can work if the layout is configured for single-wall access. Shelf depth typically ranges from 12 to 20 inches depending on what is being stored. During your in-home consultation, the designer will assess whether your pantry space can accommodate a full walk-in configuration or whether a reach-in layout would use the space more efficiently.

Cost depends on the dimensions of the pantry, the number and type of components selected (adjustable shelves, pull-out baskets, lazy Susans, drawers), and the finish. Closet America provides a written quote at no charge during the in-home consultation, so you will have exact pricing before any commitment is made.

A walk-in pantry is a room or dedicated enclosure large enough to enter, with shelving on multiple walls. A reach-in pantry is a shallower, single-access space where everything is accessible from the doorway without stepping inside. Both can be fitted with custom shelving systems. If you are unsure which applies to your space, the in-home consultation will determine the right approach.

Pantry systems use 3/4-inch panels with a thermofused laminate finish. This finish is scratch-resistant and does not require sealing. It is the same reliable panel material used across Closet America’s full product line, including closets and garage systems.
