Custom Built-In Wardrobes and Wardrobe Closets

A built-in wardrobe is a floor-to-ceiling storage unit that is designed to fit a specific wall or alcove in your bedroom. Unlike freestanding armoires, a built-in wardrobe is anchored to the wall and constructed to the exact dimensions of the space, so it uses every available inch from floor to ceiling. Closet America designs, builds, and installs custom wardrobes for bedrooms that lack a dedicated closet or need more storage than an existing walk-in closet provides.

We have designed and installed wardrobes for over 20,000 customers. Each unit is built at our facility in Landover, MD and installed by our own team, typically in a single day.

How a Custom Wardrobe Is Configured

Every wardrobe we build starts with a free in-home consultation. A designer visits your space, takes measurements, and uses our 3D design software to show you a rendered model of the finished unit before any materials are ordered.

Door style and finish are chosen independently. Wardrobes can be built with hinged doors, sliding doors, or left open-faced depending on your space and preference. Finish options include painted, stained wood grain, and a range of thermally fused laminate colors.

You can also select the depth and overall footprint. We recommend a minimum 24 inches of depth to allow clothing to hang properly on rods without bunching against the doors. From there, width and height are set to your available wall space.

During the consultation, you select the configuration of your interior. Standard options include:

  • Single and double hanging rods for short and long garments
  • Adjustable shelving for folded items, shoes, and accessories
  • Pull-out drawer inserts for jewelry, watches, and small items
  • Valet rods for planning outfits or hanging dry cleaning
  • Slide-out tie and belt racks
  • Pull-out pant racks
  • Shoe shelving sized to accommodate different footwear
  • Hideaway ironing boards
  • Interior LED lighting
  • Full-length mirrors

Built-In Wardrobe Construction Details

Because each unit is built to order, there are no standard sizes to work around. The dimensions of your wardrobe are determined by your room, not by what comes in a box.

Custom Wardrobe Design and the Closet America Process

The full process from first contact to installation follows four steps. Our closet design process is the same whether you are installing a single wardrobe or a full system across multiple rooms.

  • Consultation: A designer visits your home, measures the space, and produces a 3D rendering of the proposed wardrobe using our proprietary design software. No commitment is required at this stage.
  • Design approval: You review the design and quote. Revisions are made until you are satisfied. The quote is provided in writing and honored for 12 months.
  • Manufacturing: Once approved, the unit is cut and assembled at our Landover facility to the exact specifications of your approved design.
  • Installation: Our installation team arrives with the finished unit, covers floors with protective tarps and runners, installs the wardrobe, and cleans up before leaving. Most wardrobe installations are completed in a single day.

What to Know Before Planning a Built-In Wardrobe

A few practical considerations before your consultation:

How a Custom Wardrobe Differs from a Walk-In Closet

walk-in closet is a dedicated room or enclosed space with its own walls and door, large enough to enter. A custom wardrobe is a built-in unit that occupies wall space within a room rather than requiring its own separate footprint. Wardrobes are the right choice when you do not have a dedicated closet room available, when the available closet space is insufficient, or when you prefer storage integrated into the bedroom itself. For rooms where both solutions are viable, a custom closets consultation can cover both options so you can compare the scope and cost of each.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost depends on the dimensions of the unit, the materials and finish you select, and the complexity of the interior configuration. A basic built-in wardrobe with standard shelving and hanging rods will be priced differently from a floor-to-ceiling unit with dovetail drawer boxes, LED lighting, and custom finish. Closet America provides a written quote at no charge during the in-home consultation, so you will have exact pricing before any commitment is made.

Most built-in wardrobe installations are completed in a single day. The timeline depends on the size of the unit and whether the installation involves multiple pieces or spaces. Your project manager will provide an estimated installation window when you schedule the installation date.

A minimum depth of 24 inches is required to allow clothing to hang on rods without pressing against the door. Shallower wall spaces can still accommodate a built-in unit, but the interior would be configured for shelving and drawer storage rather than hanging sections.

An armoire is a freestanding furniture piece that can be moved. A built-in wardrobe is anchored to the wall and constructed to fit your specific space. Built-in wardrobes use wall-to-ceiling height more efficiently, eliminate gaps on the sides and top, and do not shift or tip because they are secured to the wall structure.
