Garage Makeover Before & After: Unfinished Garage Transformations, Interior Design, & Organization Ideas

3 minute read, by Closet America, on Jun 14, 2022

Whether it be just a room or an entire house, it’s exciting to take part in a home renovation and watch the space transform into something that’s both beautiful and functional. However, even during total home makeovers, the garage often gets overlooked. We get it, most people don’t think much about their garage space; aside from how comfortably they can fit their vehicles inside of it. However, a garage transformation can be just as exciting as renovating any other part of the house. Especially when it can create a space that’s so functional and aesthetically pleasing that you’ll want to spend more time in it. Whether the garage is used as a workshop, an entertaining space, or for more storage for your belongings, it may surprise you just how creative you can get!

Since most garages are left unfinished, a garage makeover will take a little more time and effort. Therefore, there are a few additional things you’ll have to consider when upgrading it compared to other spaces in the house. Follow our tips for garage transformations to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Clean Up & Preparation

Your garage makeover should first start with removing everything from the space. This gives you the opportunity to get rid of any unwanted items, and if you sell them, could make you some extra cash on the side. If you have a lot of things stored in your garage, we recommend renting a temporary mobile storage pod. Most storage pods can be delivered right to your driveway. That way, you won’t have to clutter up the inside of your home or make trips back and forth to a self-storage center.

After everything has been removed, the next step for your garage makeover will be to prepare the space for transformation. This means taking out old cabinets, workbenches, tool racks, or shelving that won’t be used in the finished design. Most people have unfinished garages with studs exposed or bland drywall. Therefore, you’ll need to start thinking about the garage interior design at this point. If your garage is unfinished, you have two options – finish the garage with drywall and a fresh coat of paint or install backing on all cabinets and other kinds of storage. It’s popular to include additional power outlets and lighting in garage transformations, so you’ll also want to consider what wiring may need to be done and prepare accordingly.

Cabinetry

Once your garage has been cleaned up and prepared for its transformation, it’s time to install cabinets that’ll help you keep the space organized. To ensure that you maximize the space available and that the result will match your vision, we recommend consulting with the organizational experts at Closet America and their design team at this stage. Keep in mind that your garage won’t be a temperature-controlled space. Therefore, you’ll need to look for more durable materials for cabinets than those you have in your kitchen or bathrooms.

Finishing Touches

Finishing touches are a part of what really makes a garage transformation pop. This could mean filling a blank wall with a piece of art, hanging up tools on the rack, labeling storage bins, adding floor mats, or maybe even adding a TV (if you planned to turn your garage into a hang-out area). We know that garage interior design isn’t something many people think about. However, putting in the extra thought and effort can really take the space to the next level.
