Bedroom Closet Solutions for Small Rooms

4 minute read, by Closet America, on Nov 14, 2019

A small room doesn’t have to feel confining—check out these bedroom closet solutions for ideas on how to make the most of your space!

Domestic architecture has gone through a long evolution. There was a time when lawns were a new idea, and so were attached garages. And space—when exactly did they begin making houses with enough space? We’re not sure, but it seems to be after nearly every house in the Washington, DC metro area had already been built.

When you are living with limited space, even basic storage can be a challenge, especially in the bedroom. There’s only one thing for you to do: get organized. The good news is, we have some bedroom closet solutions we’d like to suggest that can help with that.

Bedroom Closet Solutions to Straighten Up Your Life

If you have a small bedroom, the storage capacity of your closet becomes all the more important. If you need to get a lot into a closet that isn’t particularly spacious, you’ll want to fit as much into it as possible—but that’s only half the battle. The second half of the equation is organization. You still want to find everything easily, and you want it to be stored safely.

Here are some custom accessories that can optimize the use of space in a reach-in bedroom closet:

  • Wardrobe lifts – Instead of a rod at eye level to hang your clothes on, use the space all the way to the ceiling by installing a wardrobe lift—a high rod that can be lowered and pulled forward. That upper space in the closet is the most often squandered storage capacity in the whole house, but this useful invention lets you put that space to good use.

  • Shoe shelves – Start at the floor and work up as high as you can. Shoe shelves are an investment in good storage practice, as most people need as many as they can fit in. There is nothing better for storing your shoes in a compact, orderly manner.

  • Drawers and baskets – Drawers can help you keep items together neatly in a small space. Sweaters and other foldable attire are common drawer inhabitants, but other things can go here, too. You might like to have a file drawer in the closet, for example. Drawers can also be customized to hold specific objects, such as jewelry. Baskets can likewise be quite useful. They allow you to find what you want and access it fast.

  • Adjustable shelves – One of the easiest ways to make sure you are using your storage capacity to its fullest extent is to put your shelves closer together. This allows you to efficiently store items that don’t take up a lot of room but still warrant their own shelf space—for example, a half-shelf’s worth of books or that one box of rarely used (but still useful!) craft supplies.

  • Retractables – Keep your belts, ties, and scarves in good condition, out of sight (but perhaps not out of mind) until you need them. Retractable racks take up just inches of closet width, and can hold many pieces.

A Closet That Multitasks

Another way to make your small bedroom seem more spacious may be to take functions away from it. Once your closet storage is optimized, if you’ve still got some room left, consider moving items from the bedroom proper to the closet. Customization, after all, is key to organizing a small space. Some ideas:

  • Mount a mirror at eye level with a countertop below it where you can keep watches, wallets, toiletries, and other personal items. Above the mirror, at least one shelf will fit.

  • If you have a treasured item that deserves pride of place, but you don’t really have that place to put it yet, install a glass-fronted cabinet in the closet for it. You can even backlight it with LED lighting if you like.

  • Install a pull-out hamper and ironing board so you don’t have to store them elsewhere.
