If you want to make enhancements and bring a better level of organization to your daily living, reach out to Closet America for a custom built-in closet design.

If you’ve just moved into an older home and you want to make significant upgrades to improve your home’s value—without spending a fortune—you’ll want to take note. We helped a recent client solve a similar problem. They moved into a house in Washington D.C. about two years ago. They were sold on its central location and colonial architectural style. And for an 80-year-old house, it was in surprisingly great shape but they wanted to make enhancements and bring a better level of organization to their daily living. So they reached out to Closet America for their custom built-in closet design.

Built In Closet Design for Better Organization Throughout the House

Rather than one big project, the improvements were divided into sections; a custom built-in closet design for each of their four children’s bedrooms, a new master walk-in closet for the owners, a mudroom capable of handling the equipment that came with year-round activities of four young athletes, and an entertainment center for the family room above the garage. Let’s take a look at the options that this family chose and perhaps you’ll see some that inspire the upgrades you want for your home.

The Mudroom

With four children playing soccer in the fall, baseball in the spring, and each using bicycle helmets, skates, and backpacks regularly, scattered uniforms and plastic baskets of sports equipment in the back entrance hall just weren’t cutting it. On any typical day, the floor might be cluttered with jerseys, shin pads, muddy cleats, helmets, you name it. The new mudroom remedied those problems.

Their mudroom features space for each of the kids to keep regularly-used items. There’s one big enclosed hamper for all the dirty uniforms and the removable liner makes for an effortless transition to the nearby laundry room. Freshly cleaned uniforms and sports accessories can be stored in the slide-out chrome baskets below each locker. Polished chrome hooks were installed for backpacks, jackets, and hats as the kids come and go.

Custom Built-In Closets

The closets in the kids’ bedrooms were nice-sized, reach-in style, but they were poorly configured, which essentially meant a single wooden rod crammed with hangers, a shelf above the rod, and a pile of shoes on the floor.

The couple’s oldest daughter has the biggest closet and, naturally, the most clothing. The transformation of her built-in closet included: double-hung metal rods, adjustable polished chrome shoe shelves, and a well-placed valet rod. Together these components easily accommodate her wardrobe and provide flexibility as styles inevitably change. And as for the two slide-out tie racks, they’re finding new purpose organizing her growing collection of scarves.

The youngest has the smallest closet which, at first, didn’t lend much room to the storage of team apparel, a surprisingly large selection of footwear, and a variety of board games, and books. But the installation of double-hung rods solved that problem.

The Master Closet

The original closet in the master suite was just a big space with store-bought rods, wire shelves, and lots of unused space in the center. According to the owners, creating the walk-in closet in their master suite was a thoroughly enjoyable exercise. With a virtual blank slate (and the aid of 3D computer design technology), they worked with our designer to create the layout and select the components, accessories, and finishes tailored to the needs of their hectic daily schedules.

An island complete with soft-close drawers and a custom-designed jewelry drawer now graces the center of the closet. The island also provides ample counter space for staging or holding items and accessories between outfit changes.

Adjustable shoe shelves neatly and proudly display the entire shoe collection—from summer sandals to golf cleats. No more hunting for shoes that “must be somewhere in this closet.” They love the built-in, heavy-gauge chrome laundry hamper where soiled clothing can be hidden until laundry day. And when the laundry’s done or dry cleaning’s picked up, five strategically located valet rods are handy holding places.

The owners took advantage of the 10-foot ceilings and installed wardrobe lifts that actually provide room for growth. The rods make it easy to find the outfit you need and there’s plenty of room for a few new outfits.

Entertainment

For the kids, turning a vacant wall into a media center was the highlight of the project. The previous house didn’t have anything like this. Custom-designed components transformed the far wall of the family room to feature a flatscreen in the center with all electrical cords neatly organized and out of sight and built-in counters that provide space for snacks and drinks needed for binge-watching the latest Netflix series.

Built In Closet Designs Benefit the Entire Family

It was a wonderful experience to work with this family. There’s a collective joy to be had with a tidy mudroom (if that’s possible with four active children) and endless hours of entertainment in the new media center. This family will be in their home for many a year and our lifetime warranty ensures the value of their investment.
