There’s a lot of media attention on “buying local” – restaurants that use only local produce, and consumers joining Community Supported Agriculture groups(CSAs) to buy local seasonal food directly from the farm. Buying locally produced food supports area farmers and brings fresh items to your table.
But have you thought about the benefits of buying local when it comes to home improvement products? Dealing with a local company offers many advantages to consumers. Buying from a local manufacturer contributes to the local economy in the form of tax revenue and investment. And companies in and around our cities provide employment for our neighbors.
Another advantage is one that may not immediately come to mind – the impact on our environment. Buying products that are manufactured locally means they spend less time on trucks. Being close to the customer eliminates long-distance shipping, reducing the amount of pollution and cutting down on our carbon footprint.
So when you think of “buying local,” go beyond vegetables and think about the impact local manufacturers have on our economy and the environment!
