Make the most of any room in your Ashburn home by making it multifunctional with a custom redesign.
When you read the words “spare bedroom,” what are the first thoughts that come to mind? A rotating crowd of holiday visitors? Plastic bins gathering dust in tall stacks? The home office space you never thought you’d have the space for? When one of Closet America’s design experts exited Route 7 to head into the heart of Loudoun County, they found a client that was dreaming of a space for all three scenarios… and so the exciting and inspiring challenge began.
This local couple, born and raised in Ashburn and now raising their five kids (as young as five and up into teenagers at Riverside High School), was looking for a serious remodel on their small spare bedroom. With a healthy bit of creativity and custom design experience, we crafted a gorgeously multifunctional space that exceeded their expectations for what that small bedroom could possibly become. By combining a bedroom, home office, and extra storage space, this room became the most cleverly-used area in the home.
The Much-Needed Guest Bedroom
This is usually the deciding factor in the functionality of a spare bedroom: whether or not you’ll actually make room for a bed. There’s only so much else you can do in a room with a queen bed, especially when your fourth bedroom has fewer square feet in the first place. Some families compromise with a trundle bed or a pull-out sleeper sofa, but that also takes up the space of an entire wall. If only you could have the bed there when you need it, and absent when you don’t! Living perfectly close to Dulles, Ashburn residents from Ashbrook to Broadlands aren’t going to see any decrease in house-guests anytime soon.
This multifunctional space in Ashburn started with a game-changing idea from one of the Closet America design experts. The new design incorporated a full-size Murphy bed customized to perfectly fit the improved flow of the room. Encased in beautiful cabinetry, this solution gave the young family an instant and easy solution for mother-in-law visits and middle-school-sleepovers after school at Eagle Ridge—without taking up valuable square footage during the day.
Their Ideal Home Office
While a large majority of Ashburn’s residents commute southeast to DC, Reston, or Tysons for their work, this particular client was blessed with a more flexible working schedule that allowed for work-from-home days each week. They dreamed of having a professional-grade home office that would improve home productivity and serve as a classy backdrop for video conferencing—but their home didn’t have enough bedrooms to accommodate such a luxury. The family depended heavily on their last spare bedroom to house visiting relatives throughout the year, and didn’t see themselves devoting that space to an office.
With the sleeping space taken care of, the couple had plenty of room to dream about what elements they’d love most in a home office space. We designed a gorgeous, full-size built-in desk surrounded by plenty of cabinetry, custom file cabinets, and open shelving. With the added bonus of custom hardware, soft-close cabinet doors and hinges, and sturdy dove-tailed drawer boxes, this office design was truly stunning.
Valuable “New” Storage Space
We all depend on spare bedrooms for the extra storage space they provide. An additional closet is a serious boon for any family, but especially one with multiple kids and even more hobbies. With all of the office supplies, appliances, and files contained elsewhere in custom cabinetry, the small walk-in closet of this Ashburn bedroom was finally free for other uses. As custom organization designers, some of our favorite moments are when our clients are in awe of their entirely “extra” closet. It’s like Christmas come early for everyone involved!
Speaking of holidays, this particular Ashburn client got to knock out another of their storage challenges with this multifunctional room: decor storage. The fully-customized closet was fully equipped with an adjustable set of stable, floor-mounted shelving units in place of the previous hanging rod setup. They got to take ornament boxes, wrapping supplies, and other seasonal items out of rickety attic storage and house them in a far more accessible location—without sacrificing a single bit of functionality in the rest of the room.
